Minutes May 1997

The meeting was opened by President Earl Mann VE3PTF (now VE3EHM) at 10:20 AM on May 3 at The Plainsman Restaurant on Hwy 9 5 in Dundas. A total of 134 members and guests attended this special "Ladies Day" event.

After outlining the day's agenda a moments silence was held for the silent keys as listed below.

One of the highlights was the presentation of "The Canadian Hall of Fame" award to our own Fred Hammond VE3HC of Guelph. In his remarks John Iliffe VA3JI, who represented "Radio Amateurs of Canada" and made the presentation cited Fred's outstanding service to Individual Canadian Amateurs as well as National and International Amateur Radio organizations. John also commented on Fred's "Labor of Love" in the establishment of "The Hammond Museum of Radio" in Guelph, ON. The collection of tubes and equipment depicts over 80 years of wireless and radio progress, including a working spark transmitter and the early days of television. The "Hall of Fame Award" is the highest honour presented by RAC in Canada.

Fergus Kyle VE3LVO announced that he has resigned as a director of RAC and that the new Director is Dana Shtun. Fergus then introduced the guest speaker.

The guest speaker of the day was Jennifer Kyle of Burlington,(wife of Fergus VE3LVO) who spoke about her childhood memories of the three years she spent with her mother, brother and sister in a prison camp in the Philippines during the Second World War. Her story of how they were able to cope and survive the ordeal was deeply moving yet had some humorous aspects. Rations were eventually cut to a half cup of rice per day per person and people ate the bark off trees. The 2,000 prisoners were rescued by the 11th Airbourne Division and Filipino guerrillas.

The meeting was adjourned for lunch.
