Report of October 16/99 Meeting

 

The meeting, attended by 88 members and guests was held at The Plainsman Restaurant on Hwy # 5 near Dundas, Ont.

After outlining the meeting’s agenda, a moment of silence was held for the silent keys, former members and friends of the Chapter. They were Joseph Jefferies VE3GB of London, Charles Stephens VE3OG of Islington, Frank Walker VE3EEL of Burlington and Bill Williams of Scarborough. It was also announced that former member Jack Bolton VE3LH of North Bay passed away this past week.

Pres. Earl introduced a number of first time guests to the meeting. Bob Abell VE3XM,John Doidge VE3EUU, Ron Gimbel VE3DBD and his wife Jean VE3CBQ and retired Radio Inspector from the Kitchener office Vern Stroud VE3RVS.

The following New Members who joined since the last meeting were welcomed by Pres. Earl :

James Cull VE3ND, Ernest Crump VE3OU, and Robert Jacobs VE3CJW, who were present & Jim Anderson VE3ERA & Garry Hammond VE3XN.

Harold Braun VE3DWH Sec/Treas. gave the treasurer’s report indicating the total assets are $4,431.19 as of Aug 31 ,1999.

HAMMOND MUSEUM UPDATE
The Hammond Museum of Radio was officially opened at the new location,

595 Southgate Dr. Guelph on Oct 2,1999. The museum will be open to-day from 2:00 - 4:00 PM.

From 401 take Hwy 6 north into Guelph, and turn right on to Laird Rd., (second stop light), then take the first left on to Southgate Dr. The Hammond plant is on the left and entrance to the Museum is on the left side of the building.

Reported, with thanks to Paul Cassel VE3SY, the Chapter membership list on the web page is up to date. No printed version of the Membership Directory is planned for immediate future, so members were advised to refer to the site for member information and e-mail addresses.  Brian Gingell VE3BWG gave a report on Fred Hammond’s present condition following surgery two weeks ago. His condition has regressed, therefore Brian was asked to conduct a moment of silent prayer for Fred’s recovery.

It was announced that Colin Dumbrille, a good friend of many VE3’s including the late Noel Eaton VE3CJ passed away August 1,1999, in Bermuda. Colin held many calls and was first licensed as VE2BK. In addition, throughout his career he held VP9BK, VP9C & VE7NN.

Pres. Earl asked for volunteers to serve on a Nominating Committee to select a slate of candidates for the position of President & Secretary/Treasurer. The present executive’s term expires at the conclusion of the May 2000 meeting. Since here were no volunteers a committee will be appointed, to report to the next meeting.

The Secretary/Treas., advised the organization was now officially affiliated with RAC.

Pres Earl reported that the Convention 2000 committee will be meeting here to-day, following the conclusion of this meeting.

The souvenir pin produced for the convention was offered for sale at $5.00 US or Can. The circular lapel pin depicts the CN tower and QCWA logo.

He gave a brief report on the recent convention held in St. Louis, MO., and reported that many of those attending this year’s convention indicated they plan to come to Toronto.

The 2000 convention will be held in Toronto, Oct 12-15, 2000, sponsored by Chapter 73.

 George Roach reported on recent happenings at the QCWA board meeting. (Vice-President Croft Taylor VE3CT & his wife Elizabeth were unable to be present to-day)

  • The Journal is under funded, and various means of generating more income are being investigated.
  • The Membership Directory will no longer be available in print form, but will be available on a CD disk in the near future
  • The budget for the upcoming year was approved

  • 19 scholarships of $1000.00 each will be awarded this year

(Consideration is being given to awarding fewer but higher scholarships)

In future candidates for QCWA offices must have either e-mail or a fax machine to be eligible.

Tom Atkins VE3CDM, President of Region 2, IARU gave his report.

Rather than take up a lot of time he suggested that any one interested in detailed information regarding IARU send him an e-mail to receive to keep up to date on activities. His address is  ve3cdm@iaru.org.

IARU will be celebrating it’s 75th anniversary in April 2000.

He encouraged QCWA members to do all they can to encourage growth in the ranks at the local club level.

Bob Morden VE3EIM of London, Ontario, guest speaker for to-day, gave an interesting presentation covering Spy Radios used throughout the World Wars, the Vietnam era and present day use of satellites used in spying. He described some of the training conducted at "Camp X" and demonstrated a WWII vintage ANPRC-5 after his presentation.

The next meeting will held on May 6, 2000 at the "Plainsman Restaurant" beginning at 10:00 AM.

After the usual excellent cold and hot buffet luncheon, the meeting concluded with the draw for 70 door prizes at 1:20 PM.
