Minutes Oct 17 1998

The meeting was opened by President Earl Mann VE3EHM at about 10:15 AM on Oct 17/98 at The Plainsman Restaurant on Hwy # 5 in Dundas. A total of 94 members and guests attended.

After outlining the meeting’s agenda a moment of silence was held for the silent keys as listed below.

Secretary /Treasurer gave his report.

Paul Cassel VE3SY gave a report on Fred Hammond’s condition & the improvement since suffering a stroke June 21/98. Fred is presently at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Guelph. Attendees to-day were invited to sign a get-well card to be presented to Fred later to-day. Or sign the guestbook by clicking here.

QCWA Gold Certificates recognizing the 50 or more years of being licensed were presented to those in attendance by George Roach VE3BNO of Ottawa, newly elected QCWA Director.

Jim Cooper VE3CR was congratulated for receiving the 75 Year Certificate presented at the Goderich club meeting in June .

Certificates for recipients who indicated they were unable to attend were mailed prior to the meeting.

Jack Mac Quarrie was officially presented with a 50 Year Continuously Licensed Certificate and pin which he received before the meeting.

QCWA HQ report
Croft Taylor VE3CT of Kanata, the QCWA Canadian Director and newly elected Vice-Pres., gave his report as follows.

  • 1999 Convention will be held in St. Louis Mo.
  • QCWA (being the second largest Amateur Radio organization) presented a proposal to the FCC regarding the de-regulations now under way in the USA.
  • No complaints were received re the changes to the QSO Party rules.
  • A Canadian was awarded a scholarship.(No further details were available)
  • The Board approved a QCWA ad to be placed in TCA in the coming months to promote membership.
  • spoke in favor of Chapter 73 becoming an affiliated club of RAC
  • discussed some of the problems being addressed with The Journal such as missing Chapter Reports and errors. Paul Cassel VE3SY said he preferred more articles than lengthy chapter reports.

IARU
Tom Atkins VE3CDM gave an up-date IARU activities. Tom was re-elected to a second 3 year term as President of Region 2. Copy of his report is attached.

Old Business

QCWA Convention

Pres Earl outlined the brief history of Chapter 73’s application to host a QCWA Convention and announced that official acceptance has been received to host the convention in Toronto in October 2000. The event will take place Oct 12-15, 2000 at the Delta Airport Hotel. The committee will meet shortly to appoint the various committee chairpersons.

New Business

RAC Affiliation
Pres. Earl outlined a concern as to the qualification of Chapter 73 meeting the requirements, then asked for an indication as to whether or not the executive should proceed with this matter. No negative response was received. The matter will be investigated and the findings reported at the next meeting.

Industry Canada De-regulation
A show of hands indicated three members had responded to their MPs.

The group voted in favor of Chapter 73 submitting a response to the Federal Government along the lines of the RAC suggestion in the July-August issue if TCA. George Roach VE3BNO & later Fergus Kyle VE3LVO stressed sending a letter to your local MP with a copy to Industry Canada Minister Manley.  Click here for a copy of the letter sent to Minister Manley

QCWA Web Site
A web site will be investigated by the Convention Committee

Entertainment was provided by "The Paul Bros., & Shirley", a comedy group from Kirkton, Ont.

The meeting was adjourned for lunch.

The meeting reconvened about 1:15 PM.

Don Reynolds VE3DAR was in attendance and was acknowledged for his many years of service and dedication as Net Control of the 75 Metre Chapter Net.

The group decided the next meeting will held on May 1, 1999 at the "Plainsman Restaurant" beginning at 9:00 AM.

The meeting concluded with a selection of door prizes for the Radio Amateurs as well as 12 Ladies prizes.
