Fall '99 Chapter 73 Newsletter

 

The Fall '99 meeting will be on Saturday October 16, 1999, again at the Plainsman Restaurant on Highway 5, 2.5 km west of Clappisons Corners and Highway 6 in Dundas Ont. Coffee will be available at 9:00 AM. The meeting will START AT 10:00 AM. Please be on time.

Complete and return the enclosed form, with your cheque for $ 15.00 per person, by Oct 7/99 in the addressed envelope provided. For more information check in to the Chapter 73 Net on 3,773 kHz at 9:00 AM Sundays.

Report of The Year 2000 QCWA International Convention Committee.

  • Chapter 73 is now an affiliated club of RAC.
  • Report on the Relocating of the Hammond Radio Museum.

We will have an up date on the current status of the move and when the museum is expected to re-open.

Bob VE3DEIM of London will be speaking on the topic "Spying Through the Ages" and particularly about Spy Radios used from WWI through the Vietnam era to present day use of satellites in spying. He will demonstrate several radios including the WWII vintage ANPRC-5 used in England. He also will discuss some of the training that took place at Camp "X".

Check your address label. The figures "12/98" on the top right hand corner indicate the expiration month/year of your Chapter73 membership. If your membership has lapsed or is due shortly, please include the fee of $10.00 per year when returning the forms. If the label does not show a date your membership has lapsed for more than a year or you are a guest. For information on joining QCWA or if you have any questions regarding your current membership status contact the Secretary / Treasurer at the meeting.

Highlights from May ’99 Meeting

Fred Hammond VE3HC paid a brief visit and was presented with a certificate recognizing 70 Years as a licensed Radio Amateur. The presentation was made by Croft Taylor VE3CT, Vice-President of QCWA.

Our thanks to Brian Gingell VE3BWG, of Waterloo who made all the arrangements and accompanied Fred in the van, and to Harold Grosskurth VE3DYG, of Guelph who drove the van.

Additional Silent Keys who passed away, or the information was received after the May Newsletter was printed were, Norm Busk VE3AGW, H.S. Van Winkel VE3FWE, Jim Millar VE3AGC, Gordon MacFarlane VE3YF, Bill Bushell VE3DXY, Bob Rotenerg VE3AKN who was a member of the "Convention 2000" committee) and Hans Wetzel VE3MLL, who was also on the committee and who passed away April 21.

May Meeting Guest Speaker
The guest speaker was Herb Hilgenberg VE3LML of Burlington. Using a video projector, Herb described, how he provides weather forecasting for sailors aboard the "yachts at sea". Using SSB Marine Band radio operating on 12.359 MHz., and a home-brew "X" beam he communicates daily with sailors from Bermuda to the Caribbean. He is active 8 hours a day , 7 days a week, suggesting safe routes for as many as 80 boats a day. Herb has received many testimonials from sailors as well as the Coast Guard and the U.S. Naval Academy.
