October 1997 Newsletter

The next meeting will be held on Saturday Oct 4,1997, again at the Plainsman Restaurant on Highway #5, 2.5 km west of Clappisons Corners and Highway #6 in Dundas Ont. Coffee will be available on arrival, so come early and meet your friends. Guests are always welcome.

October 4th, 1997 Meeting
The featured speaker will be Paul Cassel VE3SY of Petersburg presenting "The Virtual Hammond Museum On The World Wide Web". One of our newest, and youngest members, Paul was licensed in 1962 and recently took early retirement from Bell Mobility. He has become an expert on web pages and the Internet from an Amateur Radio prospective. He will discuss the creation of the Hammond Museum web page and present a video-projected display. Hopefully there will be time for questions and answers to your concerns about getting on the Internet and the many uses of the net with Amateur Radio.

As usual we will have updates from QCWA Headquarters, IARU and RAC.

Silent Keys
Jim Sweet VE3AAI
of Cambridge passed away on June 28 in his 90th year. Jim was a long time member of Chapter 73 and attended the May '97 meeting with the help of his two sons, Glen VE3GCI and Jim VE3FOT. He is also survived by a daughter, Pauline Burt VE3LQA,of North Bay. Jim was the founder of the Galt Radio Club, which eventually became the present South Waterloo ARC. He was also an avid wood worker and turned out many sets of gavels that he presented to the presidents of local clubs. Our Chapter 73 President Earl Mann was presented with a gavel from Jim when he was elected last year. Incidentally, Earl Mann as a teenager, was Jim's first employee when he opened his business in Galt in 1936.

Les Gartshore VE3OL of Burlington passed away peacefully on June 3.1997, at the age of 83.

Our condolences are also extended to Fred Hammond VE3HC in the untimely loss of his daughter Judy Train in June at 42 years of age of cancer. In addition to her father and two brothers she leaves to mourn her husband Stewart and three young children.

Membership Information
Thank you for your excellent support in responding to request for Chapter dues.

In order to eliminate confusion, separate mailings, soliciting membership dues for the local Chapter will be made as dues expire. Headquarters handles the International renewals and they will issue renewal notices as required. If you have any concerns as to your status please contact the Sec/Treasurer.

The figures (10/97) on the top right corner of your address label indicate the expiration month/year of your Chapter 73 membership. If it is blank your membership has lapsed or you are a guest.

50th Anniversary Recruiting Contest
The QCWA was organized in 1947 to "Promote friendship and co-operation among Amateur Radio operators who were licensed at least a quarter century ago." QCWA membership often appeals to amateurs who want to be identified with and associate with some of the best known, respected, proficient and dedicated amateurs in the world. The knowledge that so many well- known amateurs have joined together in this unique non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the best interests of all amateurs, for now and posterity, appeals to many.

As part of QCWA's 50th anniversary a recruiting contest is being held in1997. All members of QCWA can participate. Members who sign up 5 or more new members will receive a certificate from headquarters. The member who signs up the most new members will receive a plaque. Entry is automatic. Your name and call on the bottom of the new member’s application form will cause you to be entered in the competition.

The Chapter that recruits the most new members will also receive a plaque. Each member who recruits a new member must report to the Chapter Secretary, in order for the chapter to receive credit in the contest. The contest closes Dec. 31,1997.

In conjunction with the Recruiting contest our Chapter is offering the opportunity to NEW members to join both the International organization and the local chapter by submitting one payment in Canadian Funds. Decide whether or not you want to include the publications, then complete both forms. Be sure to enter the year you were first licensed on the green form. Return both forms with the appropriate Canadian Funds to the local Chapter, NOT headquarters.

Additional forms are available from the Sec/Treas., and will also be available at the Oct 4th meeting.

Headquarters has acknowledged receipt of our donation of US$1000.00 to the Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Thanks to Paul Cassel VE3SY who assisted with the layout of this news letter and Fred Hammond VE3HC who looked after the printing and continues to provide forms, labels and envelopes.
