At our Chapter Meeting last October, we decided to look into the
feasibility of our sponsoring in Toronto, the annual convention for 2001, following the
highly successful one in Ottawa in 1996. Eight members undertook to look into this and to
report to our next meeting in May.
The eight were Tom Atkins VE3CDM, Keith Bentley VE3DHL, Al Bonner
VE3FY, Clarke Bradford VE3WCB, Norm Frieden VE3CZI, Earl Mann VE3EHM, Dana Shtun VE3DSS,
and Hans Wetzel VE3MLL. We met twice, on Nov.22 and Jan 17.
From the start, we all agreed that there were three key considerations
with which we had to deal, and that all other details were just that, and could be handled
later if we do move ahead. The three keys were:
Location and accommodation.
Programs, technical and otherwise.
An assured adequate number of workers from within the chapter to
organize and carry out the whole operation.
The first one was easy. We all felt that the location should be among
the several potentially suitable hotels in the "airport strip', adjacent to the
airport and with regular bus service to and from downtown. Two hotels were checked out as
having suitable and acceptable facilities, and there are others.
As to program, the universal opinion was that we in this area would
have no problems as to either subject matters or presenters. A suitable range of
non-technical activities would also be available.
The third element is what 'makes or breaks'. Based on the Ottawa
experience, a dozen dedicated toilers would have to be involved in, say 18 months of
planning and organization, with another 10 added in later stages and the actual
convention.
The group's enthusiastic conclusion is that we should apply for the
2001 slot, BUT ONLY IF we have firm commitments from among those present at our May 2
meeting to fill the required positions.
Resolution of this will be a major item at that meeting. Please do
come, prepared to say yes or no re your own involvement, and as to our moving forward.
Earl Mann VE3EHM.
